Do you know what makes me happy in these one-on-one fighting games? When they introduce characters that are in no way part of the game itself. When Mortal Kombat X introduced Jason Voorhees, all I could imagine was Jason dragged from across the room to the sound of “come over here.” Meshing the worlds of two separate and unconnected classics brings me great joy. The new addition to the Mortal Kombat X family is the 80’s classic alien terror, Predator. Which means that the space alien will be up against all of the classic Mortal Kombat characters for face-to-face combat.

Predator is the main villain in the 1987 film of the same name, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film is based on a group of mercenaries that head into Costa Rica’s jungle to rescue a CIA agent from insurgents. However, The group isn’t the only thing lurking in the jungle as a spaceship dropped off an alien that has the ability to become invisible and hunt prey using heat-seeking senses.

Cool Fact: Van Damme was supposed to play the part of predator in the very first film. There are different accounts as to why he ended up being replaced.  The first one I heard a long time ago was that Van Damme left Predator because he had been hired to do Blood Sport in the future and didnt want to get injured. It’s also been said that Van Damme hated the Predator costume. The original costume looked nothing like what we know to be Predator today. It was a cross between a red larvae and a reptile intended to be altered through special effects. I don’t exactly blame him. However, the special effects supervisor says that Van Damme was fired for trying to make the Predator a kickboxer in a reptile costume.

We may never know how Van Damme was cropped out of the final film but imagining Van Damme vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 80’s is everything.

Let’s think about what type of Mortal Kombat X player you could be with a character like Predator. He has cool invisibility and infrared capabilities. Based on the new trailer, it’s unclear if this will only be part of his fatality, cut scenes, or if these are abilities that you could harness within the actual game. There is some pretty good damage to be had with Predator’s massive claw, and if you’re holding on by a thread, that laser shooter over his shoulder could give you the winning edge in a pinch. He’s not the most attractive character, but he’s pretty damn useful.

The Predator will be the new kid on the street starting July 7th. In this new DLC, you can play as Predator and have access to new character skins featuring Commando Johnny, Infrared Scorpion and Carl Weathers as Jax.

As an added bonus, all players, whether you download the DLC or not, will have the Klassic Fatality pack. I actually prefer DLC’s that include new fatalities over new DLC’s that let you play as new characters. I need visually appealing diversity. These fatalities stem from the classic games for characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya and Johnny Cage.

In addition to these new set of fatalities, this free download will include a new Scorpion skin: Kold War Scorpion.

Any thoughts on this new character? Who would you like to see added to the Mortal Kombat gameplay?
