This season of Gotham has been focused on James Gordon, and for a show so centered on its main character, the finale had very little to do with him. Instead, last night’s season finale of Gotham, tied up some loose ends and introduced some more trouble for the DC villains of the show. We get our resolutions to Penguin and Edward Nygma’s one-sided love affair gone wrong, and we witness the very first fight between Joker and Bruce. Jerome is the Joker. At this point, there is no doubt about that. I had been wondering all this time how the creators of Gotham had just let him die, but now I know they had better plans for him. [Read here for my rant during Jerome’s demise a few seasons ago]

Oswald Cobblepot and Edward Nygma’s last stand

GOTHAM: Robin Lord Taylor in the ÒMad City: Smile Like You Mean ItÓ episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, Jan. 23 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Cr: Jessica Miglio/FOX.

After the detailed plan to drive Penguin mad, Nygma finally puts him on the slab for a slow death by acid. Fortunately, Penguin escaped.  Nygma had left Penguin alone and people always escape when villains don’t stay to watch their victims die. Sometime later, they’re both on a cliff and Nygma has a gun. If you thought Nygma was going to realize that Penguin killed Isabella out of love and forgive him, you’re wrong. Nygma shoots Penguin and pushes him off the cliff into the water. We last see Penguin sinking to the bottom of the river with arms still stretched out toward Nygma, while clouds of blood surround him.

Season 3 Prediction

Since Penguin can’t die yet, we have to assume he survives this.  Someone is going to take him out the water and bring him back to life, even if it takes another season before we see him again. I’m predicting that the Gotham writers will take a page from Tim Burton’s Batman movie and have him go into hiding in the sewers. It’s safe to say that the post of mayor will be given to someone else. He will also have to stay low and recuperate before he can come back for Nygma, because revenge will definitely be in the works. It’s funny that this was a very Fish Mooney ending. I wonder if she will be the one to bring Penguin back.

Bruce Wayne Vs. Jerome

GOTHAM: Guest star Cameron Monaghan in the ÒMad City: The Gentle Art of Making EnemiesÓ winter finale episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, Jan. 30 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX.

Jerome cut off the power grid to Gotham, causing a blackout and mass hysteria on the streets. Joker wannabes were running around in the dark like lunatics. With the blackout consuming the GCPD’s time, Jerome decides to start where he left off, trying to kill Bruce Wayne. Jerome brings him to his carnival and he’s the ringmaster.

In a house of mirrors, Bruce and Jerome end up sparring. Bruce beats him to a pulp. Realizing he almost actually killed someone, Bruce runs out of the tent and into Alfred’s arms. Alfred and Gordon had just arrived to the carnival looking for Bruce Wayne. Gordon intercepts Jerome, who tries to catch up with Bruce, and literally knocks his face off.

No Joke—Gordon knocked Jerome out and his face ran down like melted cheese on pizza.

Alfred and Bruce have a conversation about crime fighting and death. Young Bruce Wayne decides that he will NEVER take a life on purpose. This will eventually become a part of Batman’s well known commandments.

Season 3 Prediction

Jerome is on his way to Arkham now. I’m sure they’ll fix his face, but I have a feeling that Jerome will be channeling Heath ledger’s Joker with the scarring. I cannot wait to see next season what kind of friends he makes. Maybe this will be the opening to introducing  Harley Quinn.

We also got a preview of what’s to come when the show returns on April 24th. It looks like Nygma will be all Riddlered sporting his iconic green suit and leaving around green questions marks.
