The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug
Release Date: December 13, 2013
The second in The Hobbit movie trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug, is the return of Bilbo Baggins’s (Martin Freeman) journey with Thorin and his dwarves, to steal back their gold. Smaug is the dragon that has kicked out the dwarves from their mountain home and taken their treasure.
The Hobbit trilogy is more like a prequel to Lord of The Rings, detailing the journeys of Frodo’s uncle. As a matter of fact, in the first Lord of the Rings, Bilbo gifts a book to Frodo titled “There and Back Again” based on these same voyages. The last movie will be titled the same as the book.
Recap of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Smaug drives out the dwarves and takes their gold. The dwarf kings grandson Thorin selects a crew of 12 dwarves to take back what’s rightfully theirs. Gandalf introduces the crew to Bilbo and tricks him into joining them on their quest to be their burglar. Bilbo comes across Gollum in his journey and discovers the infamous ring that causes so much future destruction, but does not tell a soul. Escaping orcs and wargs, Bilbo and the dwarves, defeat the Great Goblin (Actually, Gandalf defeats him), and are quickly approaching the lonely mountain…
Developments of interest in The Desolation of Smaug
- Orlando Bloom will be reprising his role as the Elvin prince, Legolas. There is an apparent female elf, Tauriel that may be his love interest. It will be interesting to see what happens with her since she is not in the Lord of the Rings.
- Bilbo still has the ring and the only one who knows, is Gollum who is upset at losing his precious. Will Gollum come to reclaim his ring?
- How much will Bilbo lose his mind with the ring?
- How do these dwarves + Bilbo, expect to defeat a fire-breathing, intelligent, dragon?
