Now you can train to become a caretaker of Fablehaven. If you don’t know what Fablehaven is, then you clearly missed out on my review [read here] This a review of the gorgeous accompaniment to FableHaven, The Caretakers Guide to Fablehaven.
I was very happy to partake in the blog tour for The Caretaker’s Guide to Fablehaven, which is an encyclopedia of sorts that explains all about the magical creatures, objects, and locations that are sprinkled across the FableHaven series. As I read the books, I imagined in my head all of the creatures they described and encountered. One of the greatest marvels of reading fantasy is imagining all of the creations in your mind. But there is nothing like seeing the elements of your favorite story come to life.
It’s the reason why we all jump on a TV series based on a comic or book we like, even if we don’t think we will like it. It’s also the reason why the movies are filled with nostalgic characters and stories. Who wouldn’t want to see their favorite stories come to life?

The Caretakers Guide to Fablehaven Summary:
This guidebook to the Fablehaven magical preserve is filled with everything a new Caretaker might need to know in order to survive. There are entries detailing important information about artifacts large and small, a complete bestiary of creatures (from fairies to trolls to satyrs), a guide to identifying demons, dragons, and wizards as well as valuable insights into the other magical preserves.
Immerse yourself into the secret knowledge that has been handed down through the generations by reading the updates and notes written in the margins by the former Caretakers of Fablehaven, including Grandpa Sorenson, Kendra, and Seth. Fully-illustrated, this unique encyclopedia has gathered the world of Fablehaven into one volume.
Scattered throughout the book are colorful fairies that also mark some of the characters, artifacts, and creatures that will be featured in the upcoming sequel series, Dragonwatch.
The Caretakers Guide to Fablehaven Review:
The Caretakers Guide to Fablehaven is filled with visual images of all the fantastical elements that make the Fablehaven series so amazing. Under the guise of a guide for a prospective caretaker of a magical reserve such as Fablehaven, the book provides summaries and pictures of everything you would need to know. It is divided into sections such as: Artifacts, Creatures, Demons, Dragons, Locations, and Wizards.
Like any good textbook, this guide also has side notes from favorite characters throughout the book. Funny commentary and words of wisdom are provided by Kendra, Seth, and even, Grandma and Grandpa Sorensen. My fave would have to be Seth’s note under a pic of a giant: Kendra’s next boyfriend. 🙂
I loved the historical background on the magical artifacts and creatures. I even like the dark portrayals of the demons. I had a dark image in my mind of what Bahumat would look like, but the illustrations are so fantastic, I don’t think I could think of a Bahumat like anything other then the depicted drawing. My vision of Wyrmroost will no longer look like a decaying Disneyland, but more so, like the plump castle so beautifully illustrated by Brandon Dorman.
This is an amazing gift for children of all ages. A colorful guide to the stories that they have grown to love. It could even encourage them to read the series if they haven’t done so.
Finally, there are some references and images that tie into Dragonwatch, the next book by Brandon Mull, slated to be released in Fall 2016.
